The oilers of Tulsa lore were rough and tumble, though the occasional slick made them feel like they were on thin ice. Today's oilers have what it takes to face slippery surfaces: skates. Encourage your little ones to hit the ice with today's deal from Oilers Ice Center: Pay $45 for a Learn to Skate program (a $90 value). Youngsters ages 3 to 5 can attend Snowplow Sam sessions, designed to help preschool skaters feel comfortable on the ice while developing preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver around the rink. Children ages 6 and up can enjoy Basic Skills lessons, where they'll learn fundamental moves, like forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns, and mohawks. Choose Tuesday sessions from June 5 to August 7 or Thursday sessions from June 7 to August 9 (each from 5:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.), or opt for Saturday sessions between June 9 and August 11 (held from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.). The practice home for the local pro hockey team, this South Tulsa rink is the premiere Green Country facility for public ice skating, lessons, figure skating, and parties. If the kids' summer break starts to wear you thin, relax and let them slide -- consider it a history lesson.
