Ah, the simple joys of the country life: horseback riding, cookouts, and... wine tasting? Sometimes even the classics can be improved upon, and today's Adventure makes those happy trails even happier. Enjoy a guided horseback ride through the North Georgia mountains, travel by wagon to a rustic country cookout, and sample six wines at a local vineyard.
We'll assemble our posse at Gold City Corral in Dahlonega, the Georgia gateway to the Appalachian range that's about an hour and a half north of Atlanta. After a safety briefing with Gold City staff, we'll saddle up for an hour-long horseback trail ride. Experienced guides will lead us through the wooded Blue Ridge Mountain foothills, site of the first major US gold rush in 1828 (in your face, California). Afterward, we'll climb aboard a horse-drawn wagon for a leisurely 20-minute tour to the Secret Gardens at Forrest Hills Mountain Resort. There, our crew will nosh on a country lunch, including barbecue grilled chicken, baked beans, potato chips, a cookie, and iced tea.
With bellies full, we'll hop back into the wagon, head to our own cars, and caravan for the quick 20-minute drive to Montaluce Winery. At this scenic, Tuscan-style vineyard, a grape expert will lead a tasting of six varietals. Once we've sampled them all, we'll choose our favorite and enjoy a half glass as we nosh on a cheese pairing. Be sure to bring extra cash—discounts on bottles are available for purchase for those who find something they like. And if all this fresh air isn't enough for one day, make a weekend out of it and book a bi-level King Suite in the Mountain Laurel Inn for two nights and receive a 25% discount, or stay for one night and receive a 10% discount and get a $15 discount on an hour-long spa service. (Make sure to mention LivingSocial when booking to receive the discount.) After all, there's nothing quite like hitting the hay country-style.
