While more than a few Los Angeles transfers have pined for their own trip on that midnight train to Georgia, at least their West Coast culinary habits made it back east. With this Adventure, you can try your hand at creating your own version of a California staple cuisine with a sushi-making and sake-tasting class.
We'll gather at the trendy Aqua Bistro in Buckhead, where our team of nautical knife wielders will be on hand to make sure we stay sharp. Upon arrival, we'll be treated to an edamame appetizer and divide into smaller groups and head to one of three stations. Sushi chefs will helm all three of these cutting and rolling stations, teaching us how to make a California roll, a LivingSocial roll (avocado, tuna tataki, red snapper, asparagus, black caviar, and spicy sauce), and a spicy tuna hand roll. At each station, we'll learn proper cutting and rolling techniques, and then we'll have the chance to enjoy the fruits of our labor. And just to add in some friendly competition, we'll enter a chopstick challenge to see who will be crowned the most deft user of Asian cutlery.
Once we're filled to our lungs with gills, we'll receive an education on the various considerations that go into making sake. We'll taste two types of this Japanese rice wine and learn a bit about fermentation techniques, rice growing conditions, and how to pair both hot and cold sake with our sushi. And to make sure the lesson really sinks in, we'll finish with a sake bomb. We'll all leave with a souvenir take-home rolling mat, a belly full of delicious eats, and satisfaction in the fact that the only midnight train we'll have to take to recreate this delicious West Coast meal is one to the fish market.
