Long before Top Chef popularized culinary smackdowns in the US, Japan's Iron Chef—with its campy costumes and obscure-ingredient challenges—gave us the taste for competitive cooking shows. This Adventure pays homage to the original kitchen cage-match: Learn to make your own sushi rolls, taste three different sakes, and compete in a master sushi-rolling contest.
Meet up with our hungry team at Chiso, a mainstay of quality Japanese food in funky Fremont. On arrival, we'll each grab a seat and watch as the restaurant's expert sushi chef Hirohiko Kirita demonstrates the art of rolling. After each tasty morsel is assembled, we'll try our own hands at making each rice-and-seaweed-filling combo before progressing to the next how-to. As we learn to roll, we'll also sample three different varieties of sake—all served in custom LivingSocial glasses—and enjoy a full glass of our favorite.
At the end of the class, we'll mix things up, Iron Chef-style. We'll split into teams, each using secret ingredients (think: chili flakes, asparagus, and miso ice cream) to create the most unusual—and most delicious—roll possible. The winning team will be determined by both Chiso and LivingSocial staff and will receive a special treat. Even better: No one will walk away empty handed. Each contestant will leave with a souvenir sake cup and chopsticks... so the tasty battle can rage on at home. (Garish costumes are optional.)
