As any good Bear can attest, the best place to spend the spoils of summer is on the water; and while there's no reason to venture as far north as Vikings' territory, there's a whole lot of fun Packe(r)d into the state above us. Get your slice of the big cheese with this Adventure to the Wisconsin River Valley: a two-day trip for two people including overnight lodging, whitewater rafting, meals, hiking, a craft beer tasting, round-trip transportation, and more.
Head to 640 North Wells Street, where our Adventures team will be waiting to help check us in, grab coffee and breakfast pastries, and board our luxury buses. From there, we'll head north to Wisco, making a stop at Willow Springs Garden, where we'll meet up with fellow Adventurers from Minneapolis. We'll dine outside on a scrumptious spread of sandwiches, chips, and fruit before learning to make ice cream by hand (which we'll then get to eat along with other delicious homemade desserts).
With bellies full, we'll make our way to the rustic Stoney Creek Inn, where we'll check in and settle into our weekend digs. From there, it's a choose-your-own-adventure affair, with options to go hike at Rib Mountain, meander through the streets of charming Wausau, or just lounge at the inn's bar.
When we return from whatever outing we choose, we'll gussy up for a night on the town and head to Great Dane Pub & Brewing Co.—one of Wisconsin's best brew pubs. Here we'll be treated to a tasting of four 4-ounce beer samples and a spread of appetizers. Once we've whet our appetites, we'll sit down for a dinner of four different delectable options. For those who decide to keep the party rocking, we'll round out the night with live music, a DJ, and as much dancing as we can take.
Sunday will begin with a hot breakfast at the inn, after which we'll make our way north to Big Smokey Falls on the beautiful Wolf River, where instructors will be waiting to greet us with life vests and rafting equipment. After a brief tutorial on safety measures, we'll board our rafts and head onto the river for a five-hour journey through Class III and IV rapids, all the while paddling through rocky escarpments and protruding foliage. Along the way, we'll stop briefly for a bagged lunch, then continue on our way down the river.
Once we're done on the water, we'll dry off and enjoy a grilled cookout before re-boarding our buses and heading back to orange-and-blue territory. After all, there's nothing wrong with spending a little time in the green and gold—as long as it pertains to the colors of nature.
