Long before the posh high-rises and million dollar yachts, Marina Del Rey featured humble dinghies and lolling seagulls. Paddle toward a vantage point where you can see the old and new intersect with this Adventure: a two-hour paddleboarding lesson followed by cocktails.
We'll meet on Admiralty Way by Mother's Beach, where a team of up-right nautical citizens will be on hand to shepherd us through the docile waters. To keep our energy levels up, we'll receive an Odwalla bar to snack on, and—since we like to walk the walk of the Odwalla way to eat well, drink well, and do good—our team will be collecting clothing donations, so feel free to bring an item or two to donate. We'll also come into contact with the helpful staff from Poseidon Stand Up, who'll instruct us on how to mount our boards and paddle with ease through the inlets and ancient wetlands of the Marina. After getting the hang of standing on the flat, wooden vessel with no imminent waves—tough for SoCal folk, we know—we'll snake through the harbor, spying glances at portions of the Ballona Wetlands, casual anglers, and historic homes that predate the rapid development of this area.
With our exploration of LA history and nature complete, we'll glide back to shore and get into slightly less casual gear—as in, we put on pants and shirts and maybe some flats—and make our way over to Killer Shrimp, where we'll receive two drink tickets for rounds of cocktails. This old school Adventure sure beats renting a top-down sports car and idling on PCH halfway to Zuma.
