There are two types of white lighting: the kind you summon as a demigod in a summer blockbuster, and the kind you sip to give your body a thunderbolt sensation. Throw in some moist meats and you might just feel you've been crowned and given a throne. Turn this regal sensation into reality with this Adventure: barbecue tasting, sauce making, and moonshine tasting at the nonpareil D.B.A. Barbecue.
We'll gather at D.B.A., located in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood. There, the Adventures team will be waiting to greet us and check us in. Once we've settled, we'll head toward the covered patio, where the staff of D.B.A. will serve us an introductory cocktail. As we sip on our refreshment, executive chef Matt Coggin will walk us through how to prepare barbecue ribs and wings on the grill. We'll also be treated to an exhibit on making various barbecue sauces, from vinegar to mesquite-style flavors. Then it's our turn to create our own barbecue topper—with a bevy of ingredients at our disposal—that we'll get to bottle, label, and take home. As we create our sauces, we'll nosh on tastes of barbecue wings, ribs, and pork, as well as creamed corn and banana pudding.
With our palates warmed by the sweet and spicy flavors, and our bellies full of delish eats, it's time to dive into some swill, er, swell local spirits. We'll enjoy samples of three moonshines—original, blueberry, and apple pie—all made by Junior Johnson's Midnight Moon. With each, an expert from D.B.A. will take us through the tasting notes of this southern staple. We'll also enjoy a taste of Four Roses Bourbon, a Kentucky spirit that's been produced there since 1888. After this evening of making saucy treats (and getting a bit saucy), we're sure to leave feeling like kings and queens... of the southern culinary world, that is.
