Despite our generally calm demeanor, taste for locally sourced organic food, and penchant for meditative yoga, when it comes to sporting activities in the great outdoors, Northern Californians tend to take things to the extreme. With this Adventure, you can satisfy all aspects of your tendencies as a well-rounded Golden State resident: an overnight camping trip in Lotus, complete with whitewater rafting on the American River, a high ropes course, games, meals, and goodies from an on-site organic garden.
We'll meet on select Saturdays at 10 a.m. at Mother Lode River Center in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. With some 40 years of experience, this spot features solar-powered facilities, including hot water for showers and even electricity. Our Adventures team will be waiting to welcome us, check us in, and help us set up our campsite. (Tents are provided, but be sure to bring a sleeping bag and pillow. There's also an option to upgrade your accommodations to spacious canvas cabin tents with cots or mattresses for $50; sleeps up to 8 people. Please call ahead to Mother Lode River Center.) From 10:30 a.m. until noon, we'll have time to explore the area, either by hike, high or low ropes course, swimming in eddies in the river, or other games.
Come noon, we'll regroup and settle in for a gourmet deli lunch, including fresh fruit and organic produce from Mother Lode's garden. As we eat, we'll listen to a brief safety tutorial from Mother Lode's expert whitewater rafting guides. Then, it's time to take to the river: For the next three hours, we'll cruise down the South Fork of the American River. Known as the friendlier course of this extensive waterway, the South Fork offers views of the Sierras's stunningly beautiful scenery, as well as rapids that reach up to Class III—a pairing that's sure to sate our aesthetic and athletic appetites.
With our need for speed satisfied, we'll jump on an eco bus back to camp, where we'll have time to partake in other activities we may have missed out on in the morning, or just shower and relax. By 7 p.m., we'll be ready to refuel with a classic barbecue dinner, including appetizers, grilled tri-tip and chicken, veggie sauté, mashed potatoes, and salad. As we gather around a campfire and ease into a relaxing post-paddle evening, we'll toast s'mores and rub elbows with our fellow Adventurers as we recount the day's activities.
In the morning, we'll wake up to a freshly cooked breakfast of eggs, sausage, and pancakes; along with fresh fruit and oatmeal; as well as coffee, juice, and hot cocoa. With bellies full, we'll pack up our sleeping gear and head back home. Let this awesome Adventure be the reminder that, while we Northern Californians know what we like, it's always worth it to get out there and do it.
