Believe it or not, you don't need to hop a flight to California to tap into some serious surfer culture. Just take the A-Train to Rockaway Beach, where this tubular Adventure will teach you how to ride the waves, Brooklyn style.
We'll meet at 67th Street and Rockaway Beach. (It's about a 50-minute ride from Downtown Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens—just take the Far Rockaway Bound A-Train to the Beach 67th Street Station. Walk up to the boardwalk, then down to the beach.) As soon as everyone's arrived, we'll grab rash guards and boards, and meet our Adventures team along with instructors from Skudin Surf, who lead the direction for NYSEA Productions. With gear ready, we'll take part in a one-hour-and-45-minute surfing lesson beginning with a instruction on technique out of the water, then taking to the water with our new skills. With a three-to-one surfer to instructor ratio, we're sure to get enough instructor attention to truly enhance our righteous surfing skills.
Once we conquer the waves, we'll dry off and fuel up with an optional 45-minute guided yoga session on the beach (bring a yoga mat or use a towel). Be sure to bring extra cold water as 2.5 hours of surfing and yoga can be quite the workout—especially on the white sand. As we mingle, mix, and chill out, we'll be free to enjoy this pocket of the city that proves we New Yorkers don't need any California dreams.
