Voted Best Cardiac Surgeon by Living Magazine this year, Dr. Akram Khan is here for some preventive medicine -- specifically, quick ten-minute tests that could provide insight into heart problems:
The heart scan is used to identify any risk factors for heart problems, which could exist for people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, a family history of heart disease, or a history of smoking. The calcium score is used to estimate risk of heart disease.
The athlete's heart scan is used to identify hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), excessive heart growth, which is known to be a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. Because it often doesn't show symptoms, the test is a good way to help screen for HCM.
