Wheeler del Torro may call himself a "culinary designer," but we'd say his title also deserves "innovative" and "pioneer." In addition to the 5,000 vegan and boozy ice cream flavors he's created, he was far ahead of the curve with underground dinners; he held his first one 15 years ago. Be a part of his avant-garde experiences during the latest Barrio pop-up: a series of six-course meals with a guest chef each night ($110; or $130 with a signed copy of del Torro's The Vegan Scoop). The price includes money to spend at 3 Scoops, gratuities, and all other fees.

Held in the test kitchen for Wheeler's Catering & Frozen Dessert Co., these hearty dinners will fuse Wheeler's Afro-Cuban flavors with each guest chef's cooking style. While del Torro likes to keep his guest-chef lineup under wraps, we know that Strip T's Tim Maslow—a Momofuku veteran known for his love of meat—will be cooking on April 26, and Matt Drummond of Brasserie JO will be the collaborator on April 28. Past Barrio dinners have included slow-cooked yuca with citrus-garlic sauce, a ragout of three kinds of mushrooms with sweet peppers and tomatoes, and a corn cake with a guava glaze and grilled pineapple.
