Winter Park Mountain Lodge
A Two-Night Stay for Two in a Mountain- or Forest-View Deluxe Room, Now to June 14 ($139) or June 15 to September 15, 2012 ($159), and a Bottle of Champagne
Dictionary.com defines a park as "an area of land, usually in a largely natural state, for the enjoyment of the public." And enjoy you will with an Escape to Winter Park, Colorado.
While the surrounding mountains may be extremely rugged, the accommodations at the Winter Park Mountain Lodge are anything but. Take in the view of the soaring peaks from floor-to-ceiling bay windows during a two-night stay for two in a mountain- or forest-view deluxe room ($139 from now to June 14, 2012; $159 from June 15 to September 15, 2012), complete with a bottle of champagne and access to amenities like a pool, hot tub, and sauna.
A two-wheeling excursion is a must, considering the area is one of the best mountain-biking destinations in the Rockies, and three chairlifts give you access to more than 37 miles of downhill trail action at Trestle Bike Park. Kick back with your fishing pole, zoom down Colorado's longest alpine slide, or raft the thrilling Colorado River.
Free summer events at the base of the mountain include Cowboy Sing-A-Longs, Nature Talks, and Family Movie Nights, and pints at the Cheeky Monk Belgian Beer Cafe promise to please.
While many visits to parks include picnic fare, you'll find much better fixings at the lodge's Moffat Station Restaurant and Brew Pub, where you can dine on dishes with local flair—such as buffalo meatloaf or blackened trout—and enjoy mountain scenery.
The next day, once you are acclimated to the altitude, hike Byers Peak for a nice reward: views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness, the Gore Range, and Middle Park.
Far better than any city park or greenway, the grass is, in fact, greener and the pines are taller in Winter Park. Consider the Rocky Mountains your newly adopted recreation area with this week's Escape.
