There are few more gratifying experiences than muscling your way through earth, wind, fire, and water in the name of humanity -- and for free beer and a t-shirt. It's not a new incentive by the turnpike authority; it's MudManX, a high-intensity obstacle course coming to the Jersey Shore. A participant ticket to the July 28 race is $40 (an $80 value), while four spectator tickets, plus $10 to spend on merchandise or food, are $25 (regularly $50). The course, which will be laid out in Manchester, pits hundreds of contestants competing in 30-minute cycles throughout a 5-mile course studded with military-inspired obstacles. Harkening to primitive days when we battled Mother Nature for survival, contestants will fight over, under, and through mud pits, fiery trails, freezing water, and a top-secret wind obstacle -- if they make it that far. The American Red Cross-supporting event culminates in an all-day music festival with 20 bands performing on two stages, beer tents, food trucks, and even a mini-obstacle course for kids. Commuters, take note: here's an obstacle course worth taming.
