Walk five minutes west and you're wading in Lake Tahoe. Walk five minutes south and you're boarding a chairlift at Heavenly. Walk five minutes east and, well, if you enjoy gambling, you can do that too. Is there any better place from which to explore Lake Tahoe than the aptly named Basecamp Hotel?
Speak now and forever eat your words. Brand-new, boutique, and smack-dab in the middle of the Tahoe Basin, this 50-room hotel is dishing up this week's Escape for a two-night stay for two, Sundays through Thursdays ($162) or Fridays and Saturdays ($236), in a room with one king or two full beds.
What's in a name? Well, if you call yourself Basecamp, you'd better cater to the outdoorsman. And indeed, this stylish, environmentally friendly hotel not only walks the walk (five minutes from everywhere, remember?), it also talks the talk. Just ask one of the locals running the desk. They'll dish the lowdown on the sweetest spots on the water, then direct you to South Tahoe Standup Paddle, where you'll get 40 percent off a full-day rental of two stand-up paddleboards (with mini lesson), two single kayaks, one double kayak, or one pedal boat.
After a day on the lake (you'll also have complimentary access to the private Lakeside Beach), venture back to Basecamp for a lil' R&R in your room. It's appointed with rough-hewn wood furnishings (a log nightstand, a hand-fashioned bench) and original artwork by Bay Area native Wendy McNaughton. And what's an explorer's abode without gear? Each room is equipped not only with a 32-inch flat-screen TV, wireless Internet, and a walk-in shower, but also with a rack for drying and storing outdoors equipment.
Reach for the sky on day two with a trip up Heavenly Mountain Resort. Take the 12-minute, 2.4-mile gondola to the top; from there you'll have expansive views of the Carson Valley but also easy access to mountain biking and hiking trails.
And if you have any leg left in you, hoof it over to Stateline, Nevada, for a go at the casinos. Or not. With a rooftop hot tub, two fire pits, and an on-site bar serving specialty coffee drinks—of which you'll get four with your Escape—Basecamp plays host to more action than any casino craps game.
