About Calvin Klein

After Marty crash lands in the 1950s in the 1985 flick Back to the Future, girls call him “Calvin,” thanks to his purple Calvin Klein briefs with their signature, designer-stamped waistband. One adoring girl breathes, “I’ve never seen purple underwear before.” Just three years before the movie, Calvin Klein underwear had premiered to a great uproar. Devotees stole ads from bus stations and demanded that stars like Marky Mark “drop trou” onstage to show off their Calvins. The designer gained notoriety for hypersuggestive commercials for everything from blue jeans to perfume, launching the careers of models like Brooke Shields and Kate Moss in the process. But what has kept his brand relevant for over 40 years is its classic, impeccably tailored clothing. About Dolce & Gabbana

The names Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are synonymous with high fashion, though that was not always the case. In the 1980s, the young designers corralled anyone they could into loft spaces and even fast-food restaurants they’d transformed into makeshift show rooms. Their brand really took off after they made their Milan Fashion Week debut as part of a young talent showcase in 1985, and they continued making a name for themselves by subverting fashion tropes. Some of their bold concepts included tranforming corset dresses and leopard prints into sophisticated, wearable pieces and famously refining women’s suits with menswear-inspired shapes and tailoring. About Issey Miyake

Issey Miyake doesn’t believe in fashion. He doesn’t believe in “gorgeous clothes.” Instead, he says, what he believes in is “a human being and a piece of cloth.” His first pieces were rooted in his native Japan, including revivals of traditional quilted pieces, such as the shijira-ori, made from scraps, and the sashiko. He began his work with the goal of breathing life back into Japan, which he saw “culturally obliterated” after the atomic bomb was dropped on his hometown of Hiroshima. He focused his designs on bright color, unique texture, and above all, functionality.

After studying in Paris and New York, he began to experiment with pleating, working to twist and stitch in new and innovative ways. His goal was to find a pleat style that wouldn’t restrict movement and that would be easy to care for, and that gave birth to the Pleats Please line of apparel. In 1983, he told The New Yorker, “I want to find out what clothing might be.” He has experimented with clothing the customers themselves cut at their preferred length, dresses that resemble paper lanterns, and two pairs of pants sewn together so you and your imaginary friend can be literally joined at the hip. Although his brand has appeared in Vogue and Paris fashion shows every year since 1973, Miyake has always meant to appeal to a wider audience, emphasizing versatility and claiming the motto, “Clothes for everyone, not just a few.”
