Colombia is having its day in the sun. And not just because it sits square on top of the equator. Besides being named the number-two reader-recommended travel destination in The New York Times in 2010 (that's old news), it was also among National Geographic Traveler's Best Trips of 2012. And for good reason: From the resurgence of the historic Candelaria neighborhood of Bogotá; to the coffee plantations of Pereira, considered among the best in the world; to the dreamlike colonial town of Cartagena, which inspired some of author Gabriel Garcia Marquez's trademark magical realism, this culturally rich country of 46 million is the hottest destination of 2013.

Your Escape, courtesy of Discovery Tours, begins in the capital city of Bogotá, known as the "Athens of South America" for its many libraries and universities. With a small group of 10 to 18 others, you'll stay at the Hotel de la Opera, comprising two 19th-century houses where the bodyguards of Simon Bolivar stayed while protecting their president. The next day you'll visit the Palo Quemao market with a Colombian-food expert, and explore the historic Candelaria neighborhood while browsing a variety of markets. The day ends at with tejo, a disc-throwing competition of pre-Columbian origin, second only to soccer in popularity.

The following day you'll fly to Pereira, where some of the world's best coffee is produced. You'll visit a coffee hacienda, learn about the growing and harvesting process, and, of course, taste the famously rich product. Then it's off to the Botanical and Butterfly Gardens, where you'll discover thousands of species of plants and hundreds of species of insects. You'll wake up the next morning at the Hacienda San Jose and start out for the countryside to explore a rural town that time forgot.

The following day you'll fly to Cartagena, a well-preserved 500-year-old city on the Caribbean coast. There, you'll visit a number of historical sites, attend a talk about Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and climb a hill overlooking the city. The next day you're headed to La Boquilla, a fishing village near Cartagena, where you'll watch the fisherman at work and indulge in a fresh-off-the-line lunch with locals right there on the beach. After a farewell dinner that evening, it's off to bed at the UrbanRoyal Puerta del Reloj. In the morning, it's adios mi querida Colombia and back to the United States.
