The Destination
The road to Negril was cut just 50 years ago. People came to the small fishing village, saw the now-world-famous beaches, the sunsets, the reefs, and then just kind of, well, hung out for a while. It took almost 20 more years for the first resort to open up, and that pace pretty much sums up the vibe of this Western Jamaica town.

The Digs
Cruise into the Westender Inn in Negril, a 2012 TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice award winner, by way of that half-century-old route from Montego Bay. You'll stay in an Oceanside Deluxe room, pleasantly tucked away from the tourist drag in a private cove in the peaceful West End. Bustling markets and bumpin' nightlife are just a few minutes away, but at this boutique hotel—a three-story wraparound balcony overlooking the ocean—you'll be serenaded by the sounds of wind in the trees and waves crashing on the shore. It's the perfect setting for your included hour-long massage. And each morning, you'll get up, stand up, and wake up to a cup of Jamaican coffee and breakfast, which might include fruit, fresh-caught fish, pancakes, and omelets.

The Diversions
The fun begins with a guided trip to Blue Hole Mineral Spring. A sort of giant well encased in limestone, Blue Hole is about 25 minutes away from the inn and affords guests a unique opportunity to soak in natural mineral waters deep below the earth's surface.

Head for higher ground on your included trip to West End Road, and take in the reggae and westward views, Red Stripe in hand, atop the 40-foot sea cliffs at Rick's Cafe. It's the area's first public bar, opened in 1974, and for those looking to show off their real courage—not of the liquid variety—Rick's boasts a number of cliff-diving platforms with deep, crystal-clear water below.

Like the music, which you'll hear everywhere, Jamaica's fare cannot be missed. For some local flavor, try the jerk chicken and pork—heavy on the allspice and Scotch bonnet peppers—from Jenny's while you mingle with locals

  • "You'll soon find yourself falling in love with Negril's insouciance and its scintillating 11-km-long beach sliding gently into calm waters reflecting a palette of light blues and greens."
