The Destination
For all the culture that's cropped up in Boise lately, the metropolitan capital of Idaho has remained miraculously free from the weeds of urban sprawl. Amiable residents wave from the porches of their geothermally heated homes as trolleys snake through the downtown's late-19th-century buildings, sidewalk cafes, monthly community art and music festivals, and Art Deco theatres. In the spring, Paddle boats dot the Boise River Greenbelt in Julia Davis Park while winter brings attention to the slopes at Bogus Basin Ski Resort. With award-winning Snake River Valley wineries nearby, you'll have plenty to drink in.

The Digs
The brainchild of relentless tinkerer John Fairchild, Boise Hillside Suites is often known as "The Most Complicated House in the World"—and delightfully so. Hewn from the earth with rose-stone door jambs and concrete and natural walls, the property offers a rustic yet contemporary charm. There are only three rooms on the grounds, each with professionally pressed Italian linens, Camille Beckman creams and lotions, and fresh in-room flowers from the local greenhouse. One step outside your private entryway puts you smack in the middle of the Oregon Trail, with the Owyhee Mountains and Idaho statehouse in the distance. Here, the only disturbance is the occasional Albino deer and a contingency of quail who dart across the ground every morning in search of breakfast.

  • "What a great, romantic, fun evening at this quaint place! From the fireplace to the soothing hot tub, we felt wonderful and pampered... We will be visiting again soon."
