The Destination
Nowhere is the portrait of small-town America as vivid as it is in Vergennes. Vermont's first city has today become its smallest, but the larger-than-life past of this 18th-century town (most of it listed on the National Register of Historic Places) has ensured that Vergennes will live on not only as a tribute to the past, but as a getaway town with quaint restaurants, plenty of recreation, and that down-to-earth friendliness you won't find in the city.

The Digs
Packed with New England charm, the AAA Three Diamond-rated Strong House Inn is perhaps the best example of Greek Revival architecture in the area, itself listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With views of both the Adirondack and Green Mountains, this 15-room inn—built in 1834—features a courtyard, gazebo, and gardens. Inside, the Seaside and Plantation rooms are furnished with a four-poster king-size bed, a gas fireplace, cathedral ceilings, and coffee and tea niches. Other amenities include wireless Internet, TV, phone, and air-conditioning.

Swing by the Ticonderoga Great Room and Tavern to kick off the evening with a cocktail and unwind. Next, head up to the Black Sheep Bistro and use your $25 dinner voucher to enjoy a French-inspired meal prepared with fresh, local ingredients.

The Diversions
Shelburne Museum is one of the country's most diverse museums of New England history, containing paintings, folk art, quilts and textiles, carriages, toys, tools, gardens, historic houses, and the famous 220-foot restored steamboat Ticonderoga
• The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum has something for all interests and ages. One of the best experiences visitors have is meeting and talking with experts who are eager to share the history, ecology, and lore of Lake Champlain
• Sample your way around Dakin Farm and enjoy summer sausage, Vermont cheddar, wild strawberry jam, and more. Fill up your cooler with the best Vermont has to offer
• Visit Lincoln Peak Vineyard for a tasting and tour of the largest grape producer in the state and the only winery in America to win three Best of Show awards (in '09, '10, and '11) at the International Cold Climate Wine Competition

  • “Soft, elegant warmth describes both the Inn and the owners: You feel like old friends within minutes of your arrival. Surroundings, inside and out, are both beautiful and comfortable. Truly a place where stress falls away."
