The Destination
When your mind is as idle as Beantown traffic, follow the thousands of artists and writers who looked to the coast for inspiration and book it to the Lower Cape. Everywhere you turn could be a scene from a postcard, with sandy shorelines, stalwart lighthouses, and sails flapping in the wind. Large swaths of protected land and historic seaside communities generally escape the snarled traffic and trappings of tourism more common closer to the mainland. The Lower Cape is ready to welcome travelers searching for an authentic experience—Cape Cod as it used to be.

The Digs
The 19th-century Inn at the Oaks—a Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence winner in Eastham—has a literary legacy of its own: Naturalist writer Henry Beston stayed at the historic property in the 1920s while penning his classic The Outermost House. Painted a sunny canary hue with a gracious porch wrapping around its exterior, the inn contains 13 guest rooms individually appointed with antique furnishings, private bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and Wi-Fi.

The Diversions
• Rent some wheels from Little Capistrano Bike Shop
• Pedal around the Cape using a map of literary sites as your guide
• Set up a complimentary umbrella and beach chairs on famed Coast Guard Beach
• Snack on a basket of fried clams at landmark Arnold's Lobster & Clam Bar

  • "Exceeded all of our expectations and more. This charming house has character. Food was fresh and yummy. Only regret was we couldn't stay longer. Definitely recommend Inn at the Oaks if you're in Cape Cod."
