The Destination
Perhaps the earliest English settlement in America, Norfolk, Virginia, is the prize of the Tidewater Region, a huge natural harbor that combines a deckhand's sense of adventure with a shipbuilder's love of refinement. The same waterline that beckoned the British now hosts historic downtown museums and studios and draws new ventures, pursuant to the town motto, "Thou shalt grow." To this day European sensibility pervades in highbrow plays and the trendy eats of Ghent. For nightlife, look no further than the bars and bistros of Granby Street, bubbling up on the Elizabeth River and spilling over into the trolley-traveled turf of the opulent Ocean View community down to the Chesapeake Bay.

The Digs
The Freemason Inn Bed and Breakfast is less than a mile from Norfolk's most popular haunts, but you won't hear the sound of town from this lodging's secluded spot. The upscale Victorian bed and breakfast provides—in addition to an included three-course breakfast each morning—down-to-earth service in elegant guest rooms outfitted with king- or queen-size beds, clawfoot bathtubs or two-person jetted Jacuzzi tubs, pedestal sinks, and gas fireplaces. The cobblestone walk away of the jasmine garden leads directly to the prow of the USS Wisconsin, underlying the inn's proximity to local treasures both historical and spectacular.

The Diversions
• Take a nature walk through the Norfolk Botanical Garden or the Virginia Zoo
• See battleships moored in the nation's oldest port at the National Maritime Center
• Hike Cannon Ball Trail or Kayak Lake Drummond
• Tour the Chrysler Museum of Art, named the state's best by The New York Times.

  • "This was the first stop on our way down the East Coast where we stayed in many B&Bs along the way. It couldn't have been more of a pleasant surprise, and it is among the top of our list of places we will visit again."
