The Destination
If you're looking to get into the thick of California's Silicon Valley, Santa Clara is your destination. Located in the heart of the famed tech center, Santa Clara is a veritable history lesson in the area's architecture: Colonial-style missons give way to the stately columns of college campuses that fade into ulta-modernist technology headquarters—the common denominator being the palm trees that sway in the Northern California breezes. Amid all this modernity is a breathtaking natural landscape that includes hike-able rolling mountains, sprawling vineyards 20 minutes away, and three sparkling creeks that flow into San Francisco Bay.

The Digs
The historic, pet-friendly Madison Street Inn is located just an hour south of San Francisco. Each of the six rooms is individually decorated and cable TV and DVD players are standard. The Monroe comes with a queen-size brass bed, a private bathroom with a shower and soaking tub for two. The Madison is elegantly appointed with Ralph Lauren diamond-etched walls and exposed wood floors, and comes with a queen-size, four-poster bed and private bath. Breakfasts feature home-grown fruit and an array of baked goods and fresh coffee. Like everywhere else in Silicon Valley, Wi-Fi is available throughout the premises, so you can surf the web while you roam the gorgeous grounds, bask by the sparkling pool, hit the spa, or cozy up next to the outdoor fire pit while nibbling on warm chocolate chip cookies, offered each afternoon.

  • "Enjoy the 1890 house and furnishings, relax in the hot tub and heated pool, and soak in the friendly family-like atmosphere that the innkeepers, Theresa and Ralph, have created with the inn."
