The Destination
History and beauty run deep in Stillwater. Both the birthplace of Minnesota and one of America's Prettiest Painted Places according to the Paint Institute of America, Stillwater's downtown dazzles with Victorian architecture, outdoor art walks, sidewalk cafes, antique stores, and book shops—all nestled nearby the region's scenic bluffs and the St. Croix river, just a half-hour from the Twin Cities.

The Digs
Proprietors Julie and Jeff Anderson turned an 1880s lumber baron's mansion into Rivertown Inn, an elegant literary-themed B&B trimmed with pencil-thin details. Statuesque fountains, bright gardens, and wrought-iron gates receive guests, who find further luxury in suites named for 19th century authors. Rich reds, elegant drapes, tufted leather chairs, stained-glass windows, Victorian fireplaces, and private bathrooms with a Whirlpool tub piece together a storybook stay.

  • "The details in the décor make you feel like royalty. This fabulous B&B has a well-laid out social hour with a great selection of cheeses, meats, and [more]. They also have an honor-system bar selling a good selection of wine at cost."
