The Destinations
Known as the most European of South America's cities, Buenos Aires is teeming with energy from sunup to sundown—except, of course, during that mid-afternoon siesta when most businesses close for lunch and a nap. But with neoclassical architecture lining the wide boulevards, plus omnipresent cafes, bustling street markets, and tango salons at every turn, Argentina's cosmopolitan capital doesn't rest for long.

One of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, Iguazu Falls is unlike any other cascade on the planet. More than a dozen miles of thunderous falls comprise this awe-inspiring site, which forms the border between Argentina and Brazil. It's hot and humid, and coming from Buenos Aires, it's an otherworldly escape from the city into a sort of lush Eden.

Mendoza, Argentina's wine capital, is best known for its Malbec, but other varietals such as Merlot and Pinot Noir have also left their mark on the world stage. Founded in 1561 by the Spanish, the city is at once cosmopolitan—boasting some of the country's best restaurants—and peaceful, with beautiful countryside never far away. With perennially sunny weather and relaxed cafes, Mendoza is the kind of place you'll want to linger in for awhile.

Founded in 1541, the Chilean capital of Santiago is home to more than six million. Here, the Chilean National History Museum and the famed Presidential Palace are juxtaposed with a booming restaurant scene and trendy shopping centers. Santiago wows with neoclassical architecture, including the tallest building in Latin America, and the rapidly moving Mapocho River—all set against a backdrop of jagged Andean mountains.
