The Destination
Peru may be best known for Macchu Picchu, but this South American nation's other stunning features shouldn't go unnoticed. The capital city of Lima blends its ancient and colonial histories with the energy a modern metropolis. Incan artifacts are on display at the National Museum, while the Cathedral of Lima in the Plaza Mayor is an enchanting tribute to Spanish colonial architecture.

As Lima is the modern capital of Peru, Cusco is the historic capital of the Inca Empire. Here, travelers traverse 500-year old streets, through massive outdoor markets and past spirited music and dance troupes. The city also serves as the gateway to Machu Picchu, the astonishingly beautiful ruins at the apex of the Inca Trail.

Deep into Peru's interior, the Amazon Rain Forest teems with life. Spanning more than 2 million square miles of South America, it is the largest, most biodiverse rain forest on the planet. The Peruvian portion offers a rich sample—from the shrill sounds of Monkey Island's myriad residents to the quiet shores of crystal-clear Apu Victor Lake.

Embrace the full Peruvian experience with this 12-day tour of Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, and the Amazon, courtesy of Kaypi Tours & Adventures.

The Itinerary
day 1: Take off on your overnight flight from Miami or Los Angeles to Lima, Peru.

day 2: Touch down in Lima, where a Kaypi Tours representative will be waiting to transport you to your hotel. Once you've dropped off your things, embark on a city tour of Lima, stopping at the following landmarks: Huaca Pucllana, the Historic Centre of Lima, Plaza Mayor, the Government Palace, the Archbishop's Palace, the Cathedral of Lima, City Hall, the Central Bank Museum, the Church of San Francisco, and modern Lima. At the end of the tour, you'll have the afternoon at leisure.
Overnight at Casa Andina Classic Miraflores San Antonio or similar.

day 3: In the morning, you'll be taken back to the airport to catch a flight bound for Cusco. When you arrive, a tour representative will meet you and bring you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to spend as you please.
Overnight at Casa Andina Classic Cusco Plaza or similar. Breakfast provided.

day 4: The day begins with a guided walking tour of Cusco. Along the way, you'll visit Plaza de Armas (Cusco's main square), Plaza Nazarenas, the San Blas neighborhood, the Twelve Angle Stone, Plaza San Francisco, and the Mercado Central de San Pedro. The afternoon is free of scheduled activities, giving you time to explore the city for yourself.
Overnight at Casa Andina Classic Cusco Plaza or similar. Breakfast provided.

day 5: Wake early to start your journey through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. An air-conditioned motor coach will bring you to the Chinchero Inca site and a local market, the salt mines of Maras, and finally the Moray Inca site. By the end of the day, you'll reach your hotel in Ollantaytambo.
Overnight at El Albergue Ollantaytambo or similar. Breakfast provided.

day 6: Your time in Ollantaytambo begins with a half-day tour of the city, with stops at the sacred Ollantaytambo archaeological site as well as other landmarks. Once you've got your bearings, the afternoon is all yours.
Overnight at El Albergue Ollantaytambo or similar. Breakfast provided.

day 7: A morning train ride will bring you to Agua Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu. Drop off your luggage at the hotel, then head out to see the city. While there is no organized tour, your guide can recommend places to visit, like the Chavez Ballon Museum, Mandor Gardens, and the hot springs.
Overnight at Machu Picchu Green Nature or similar. Breakfast provided.

day 8: Your guide will pick you up before dawn for the bus ride to Machu Picchu. If possible, you'll arrive at Machu Picchu in time to watch the sunrise, then embark on a two-hour guided walking tour of the site. You'll have some time left over to scout around the ancient city on your own, then return to Aguas Calientes for the afternoon train back to Cusco. A tour representative will meet you at the train station in Cusco to take you to your hotel.
Overnight at Casa Andina Classic Cusco Plaza or similar. Breakfast provided.

day 9: No scheduled activities means you'll get the entire day in Cusco to yourself. You'll receive a Cusco tourist pass, called a Boleto Turistico del Cusco, that gives you access to a host of landmarks and museums throughout the city. At night, you'll be transported to the bus station for an overnight ride to Puerto Maldonado, a city in the Peruvian Amazon.
Overnight on an air-conditioned motor coach. Breakfast provided.

day 10: You'll arrive in Puerto Maldonado in the morning, then transfer to a village on the Madre de Dios River. Here, board a small boat for the trip down this tributary of the mighty Amazon river. You could spot crocodiles, turtles, herons, and other species along the way, before arriving at your rain forest lodge.

Once you've settled into one of the comfortable bungalows and eaten lunch, a specialized guide will take you to see Monkey Island. The island is an ecological reserve and rescue center for abandoned and orphaned monkeys located in the center of the Madre de Dios River. Eight species—including spider monkeys, howler monkeys, tamarins, and marmosets—reside here, and the rehabilitated animals roam freely throughout the island.
Overnight at EcoAmazonia Lodge. Lunch and dinner provided.

day 11: Singing birds signal the dawn in the Amazon. Today, you'll hike deep into the jungle, following paths with special bridges that span the steep ravines. The route brings you to beautiful Apu Victor Lake, encircled by swamps and massive trees. You'll climb up to an observation deck overlooking the lake and surrounding rain forest, giving you a bird's-eye view for spotting wildlife. Look for parrots, toucans, herons, and caimans, and if you're very lucky, you could glimpse a giant nutria.

You'll return to the lodge in time for lunch, then set out again to see the Gamitana River, originating from deep in the jungle interior. Turtles, caimans, butterflies, and other animals are common along its banks, and its waters are refreshing for a quick swim. By the end of a long day, you'll be ready to get back to the lodge for dinner and rest.
Overnight at EcoAmazonia Lodge. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

day 12: Say goodbye to the Amazon, then transfer to the airport for your flight back to Lima. At the Lima Airport, you'll board your return plane to the US.
Breakfast provided.
