The Destination
Within the mitten shape of Michigan, the Leelanau Peninsula is known as the pinky finger—a protrusion that makes up for its lack of surface area with some of the state's most stunning scenery. Here, steep sand dunes cascade into cold, clear lakes brimming with bass, perch, trout, and whitefish (a bounty that powered the city of Leland's historic Fishtown). In addition, a slightly milder microclimate has made the peninsula's farms foodie destinations for their miles of orchards, tart cherries, and award-winning Chardonnays.

The Digs
Hidden among the rolling hills of the scenic M-22 highway and surrounded by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, the Bass Lake Cottages sit snugly between the farms of the peninsula and the shores of Lake Michigan. Americana at its best, each rustic cottage or rustic cabin comes equipped with a fishing boat, a kayak, a full kitchen, and a welcome basket full of fresh local goodies. Wander down the two-track road to Good Harbor Farm, where your hosts offer organic eggs, produce, honey, and herbs—perfect for preparing a country breakfast or the catch of the day. There are five inland lakes, a clear creek, and Lake Michigan within a few minutes of your rustic cabin. And, in the evening, keep an eye out for the Northern Lights or a meteor shower while making memories and s'mores around the fire pit.
