The Destination
On Costa Rica's Pacific coast, the Gulf of Nicoya whips up lively swells and consistent beach breaks. It's no surprise, then, that an enviable position on the gulf turned Jacó—pronounced ha-co—into one of the country's best loved surf towns. Ticos and foreigners alike flock to Jacó in ever-growing numbers, and some resolve to stay; the year-round warmth, tropical verdure, and accessible beaches have seeded entire communities of wealthy ex-pats who extended their vacations indefinitely.

To the north, Nicaragua's golden sunsets and steamy lagoons are the stuff of pirate legends. "The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes," this Central American destination is home to the 10th largest freshwater lake in the world—covering 3,200 square miles—and 18 active volcanoes. For sherbet-hued Baroque churches and lively outdoor markets, Granada is your best bet. Founded in the early 16th century, the historic city proudly bears the nickname, "The Great Sultan" in homage to its Moorish namesake in Spain.

To experience Jacó's swells to Granada's cathedrals, journey to the heart of Central America with this nine-day trip, courtesy of Continental Getaways:
