The Destination
Split like a pair of crescent shells, Malaysia's two distinct sides are separated by the blue-green waters of the South China Sea. In Peninsular Malaysia, curries, noodles, and soups beckon from the stalls of open-air markets, where the colors of the foods are as electrifying as the tastes. In Malaysian Borneo, the cosmopolitan city of Kuching intrigues with its modern skyscrapers and historic temples. Away from the city, the iconic longboats in Batang Ai provide the ideal backdrop for the storied jungles that blanket most of the inner region.

North of Peninsular Malaysia, Bangkok, Thailand, is rich in both culture and scenery. Here, the majestic Chao Phraya River branches out into a variety of tributaries as it winds throughout the city, passing by temples and golden Buddha statues. Stroll through the markets or pop in a traditional restaurant—no matter where you go, you're sure to be enveloped in warm Thai generosity.

For a look at life from the other side of the planet, journey beyond familiarity's borders with this this 11-day Escape from Friendly Planet Travel:

The Itinerary
days 1 and 2: Board your overnight flight from the US to Malaysia. You'll lose a calendar day crossing the International Date Line, but get it back on your return flight.

day 3: Touch down in Kuching where a Friendly Planet representative will meet you for the transfer to your posh digs for the next two nights.
Overnight at the Hilton Kuching.

day 4: Today, you'll explore Bako National Park, one of the best places in Sarawak to observe wildlife that includes silver-leaf monkeys, flying lemurs, bearded pigs, and more. Your journey begins in the neighboring village of Bako—a Malay fishing destination built on stilts over the river—where you'll board a 30-minute cruise to the remote coastal park. Upon your arrival, a local guide will help you navigate the jungle trails. After lunch, return to your hotel in Kuching, where the remainder of the day is yours to do as you please.
Overnight at the Hilton Kuching. Breakfast and lunch provided.

day 5: After breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive to the Semengok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. Established in 1975, this 1,800-acre virgin forest provides sanctuary to some of Malaysia's most endangered wildlife, including hornbills and monkeys. At the Center, take advantage of the opportunity to learn about the orangutan rehabilitation process and more. From Semengok, you'll proceed to Batang Ai via motor coach and take in views of rice fields, cocoa plantations, and rain forests. Later, your group will cruise by boat across the Batang Ai Reservoir to your hotel.
Overnight at the Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort. Breakfast and lunch provided.

day 6: Rise and shine before boarding a longboat for a cruise down the Engkari River bound for an authentic Iban longhouse. At the longhouse, experience the legendary hospitality and charm of the locals as you learn about their fascinating culture. Later, enjoy a picnic lunch by the riverbank. Time permitting, your group will embark on a short trek through the jungle around the longhouse before returning to Batang Ai.
Overnight at the Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort. Breakfast and lunch provided.

day 7: After breakfast, depart for Kuching. En route, you'll stop for lunch in a charming roadside town before transferring to the airport to board your flight to Thailand. After landing in Thailand's bustling capital city, you'll be greeted by a representative before settling in at your hotel in the heart of Bangkok.
Overnight at Rembrandt Hotel. Breakfast and lunch provided.

day 8: Today, an exciting canal boat ride gives you a close up of traditional Thai life. During your trip down some of Bangkok's famed waterways, you'll visit the Royal Barge Museum, Wat Arun, and Wat Po, the oldest temple in Bangkok. Your temple tour concludes at Wat Benchamabophit, also known as the "Marble Temple" because of its abundance of white Italian marble.
Overnight at Rembrandt Hotel. Breakfast and lunch provided.

days 9 and 10: Your two remaining days in Bangkok are yours to spend as you please. Enjoy sightseeing, shopping, or a variety of optional tours. Your tour director will gladly offer suggestions for independent exploration.
Two nights at Rembrandt Hotel. Two breakfasts provided.

day 11: Bid farewell to Thailand as you transfer to the airport to board your return flight to the USA via Taipei.
