The Destination
At points in Pittboro's 228-year-history, the town was in the running to become both the site of the University of North Carolina and the state's capital. Neither came to pass, but that didn't stop it from creating its own unique identity. Less than 20 miles from Chapel Hill and 35 miles from Raleigh, Pittsboro's charms lie not only in its 1881 courthouse and the cute shops on Hillsborough Street but also in its free-spirited way of life. It's an arty town of 3,500 residents, a slow-moving place full of co-ops and book stores and farm-to-fork restaurants. It's even got its own colorful currency, the Plenty, which several local establishments will accept as payment for goods and services.

The Digs
Rosemary House Bed and Breakfast, a 1912 Colonial Revival inn and the "Best B&B in Chatham County" three years running, welcomes visitors with manicured gardens and a white veranda replete with rocking chairs. Inside, you'll find your antique-filled guest suite equipped with complimentary Wi-Fi and a constant supply of fresh cookies. The Retreat and Haven rooms both come with a fireplace and a two-person air-jet tub, and all rooms are equipped with a flat-screen TV, a private bathroom, air-conditioning, and amenities like a hair dryer and ironing board.

The Diversions
• Guests staying on the weekend will get one tasting for each of two guests at five wineries on the Heart of North Carolina Wine Trail
• Reserve a table at Oakleaf, named Restaurant of the Year by the News & Observer
• Peruse the shelves at Circle City Books & Music, which opened last November

  • "What's not to love? Perfect breakfasts. The bottomless cookie jar. Within walking distance to good local restaurants. Rosemary House has quickly become our favorite annual getaway."
