It's 86 and sunny at this all-inclusive resort in Roatán. What are you waiting for?

The Destination
While it may be difficult to find an off-the-beaten path location without a few extra sets of footprints on it nowadays, Honduras still qualifies as such. Sandwiched between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean in Central America, backpackers and adventurers are slowly descending upon this Spanish-speaking country to uncover the history and culture shaded by its jungles. Mayan ruins like Copan stand among the calls of birds and monkeys in the trees, while sea life in the coral reefs off Roatán and the Bay Islands offer an equally colorful atmosphere. Labyrinths of paths in nature reserves uncover sights of jaguars and waterfalls, and the walkways of markets divide these hubs of handicrafts and flavorful eats. The beauty of Honduras may still be under wraps, but it won't be for long.

The Digs
Overlooking the West Bay Beach of Roatán, the largest landmass of the Bay Islands, Las Sirenas by Mayan Princess Beach and Dive Resort is in the midst of activity. Yellow-and-white striped lounge chairs line a white sand beach where guests kayak and snorkel, while others swim in a blue lagoon pool near canopy beds. Guest rooms are outfitted in bright, tropical shades mirroring the garden outdoors, and feature queen-size beds, private bathrooms, and LCD satellite TVs.

After breakfast in one of four restaurants on the property, tee off on the island's only golf course, The Black Pearl. Later, walk to the beach for a dip or a volleyball game before a pre-dinner trip to the spa. The next day, rise early for a diving excursion to the Mesoamerican Reef to see more than 500 species of fish and other animals.

  • "But there's much more to Roatán than its reef. Exquisite white sand beaches like West Bay, a mountainous interior of pine-forested hills and the remote wild east of the island (once a key pirate hangout) beg to be explored."
