The Destination
Santa Paula was founded on oil. Lots of it. About an hour north of Los Angeles, the town was booming by the turn of the 20th century, eventually becoming the film capital of California before Hollywood was even a glimmer in anyone's eye. Saloons, gambling parlors, and houses of ill repute thrived here, even during Prohibition, and by the late 1930s Santa Paula was the filming location of choice for many of the country's biggest production companies. Things have since mellowed out, but not by much. The city's diligent maintenance of its historic buildings has brought more than a few film crews to town in recent years, and its abundant sunshine and fertile topsoil have contributed to its current claim to fame: the Citrus Capital of the World.

The Digs
Featured this year on the Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures," The Glen Tavern Inn & Restaurant was built right around the time that Santa Paula was hitting its stride, in 1911. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1981, the inn began careful renovations in 2004. Since then, it's been updated to incorporate a number of modern amenities while paying homage to its roots. Ghosts, of course, never leave their post.

Each of 36 rooms showcases a contemporary take on the hotel's Wild West roots, and is appointed with cable television, wireless Internet, telephones, and comfortable bedding. For dinner, drop in for exquisite Italian cuisine at the on-site restaurant, serving Old World favorites such as pollo al limone and bruschetta al pomodoro.

  • "Stay was excellent. Quiet night sleep and very comfortable bed. We love how quaint the tavern is—a lot of character."
