The Destination
Burnt-adobe brickyards sprinkled with saguaro cacti pepper the landscape of Sasabe, a 45-mile expanse of Sonoran Desert 70 miles south of Tucson in the Altar Valley. 300 days of sun shine on this South Central Arizona town at the base of the Baboquivari Mountains—a range considered holy by local tribes. Throughout history, Spanish Jesuits, Mexican revolutionaries, and lost Navajo tribes have each made this stretch of the Sonoran on the outskirts of the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge their home, leaving behind missions, ghost towns, and still-active artist colonies that draw visitors through the grasslands.

The Digs
Once a battle site during the Mexican Revolution, the 300-year-old Rancho de la Osa Guest Ranch is an authentic hacienda-turned-guesthouse boasting rustic comforts like wood-burning fireplaces, mountain views, vine-laden courtyards with bubbling fountains, and year-round pools. Adobe guest rooms include queen or twin beds, private bathrooms with robes, and hand-milled bath amenities. Sumptuous dinners feature a fresh salad with ranch-made dressing, a delectable entrée, and a delicious dessert.

The Diversions
• Throw back a Prickley Pear Margarita at the Cantina
• Saddle up for trail riding on more than 135,000 acres of grass and mountain trails
• Enjoy a guided hike in the stillness of Navajo lands
• Hit the links amidst the Sonoran Desert backdrop at Starr Pass Golf Club or the Tubac Golf Resort

  • "This tranquil ranch, set on 250 eucalyptus-shaded acres near the Mexican border and Buenos Aires preserve, was built in 1889, and two adobe structures were added in the 1920s to accommodate guests... [and] contribute to the back-to-basics serenity."
