The Destination
Just three miles as the crow flies from Florida's border with Georgia, Fernandina Beach, on the northern tip of Amelia Island, is more akin to the Old South than to the beach communities that have come to define the Sunshine State. Here, more than 400 beautifully preserved Victorian-era structures have found their way onto the National Register of Historic Places, and visitors to downtown can still hail a horse-drawn carriage or hop aboard an old-fashioned trolley. It's also home to the oldest continuously operated watering hole in Florida, the Palace Saloon. Still, this is nothing if not a beach town. Fishing, swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling are popular activities throughout the year, while many come to simply kick back on the virtually vacant sand.

The Digs
One of the town's newest inns, Seaside Amelia Inn is situated right next to the beach and just a few blocks from the historic downtown. Take in the views from the oceanfront rooftop terrace or go for a dip in the outdoor pool before settling in to your spacious studio. Decorated in contemporary style and furnished with a queen-size bed and a sleeper sofa, studios are appointed with a private deck overlooking the beach and pool, a 27-inch flat-screen cable TV, a mini-fridge, a microwave, and a wet bar. In the morning, wake up to a hearty continental breakfast before heading into town or hitting the beach.

  • "We had an excellent stay at the Seaside Amelia Inn. Hotel was clean, staff was super friendly, breakfast was great! My husband and I wished we were staying longer. Will definitely visit again!"
