The Destination
There aren't many places in the world where you can expect to see a bison herd by day and a school of flying fish by night, but twenty miles south of Los Angeles, Santa Catalina Island fits the bill. Brought to the island by ferry for a classic movie shoot only to be abandoned later, the buffalo that roam the rugged hills lucked out—with sunny skies and temperatures that hover near 70 degrees, who wouldn't want to be marooned on these palm-lined, silvery sand shores?

The Digs
Catalina Beach House Hotel started out as a sea captain's houseboat, which was hauled out of the water and onto a parcel of land he acquired on the island. In the near century since it sailed the ocean blue, the house has been completely remodeled to offer accommodations with kitchenettes and cozy beds. Some rooms even feature jetted tubs and decks with harbor views. This hillside perch one block from the beach ensures guests are within walking distance of the sand, not to mention the charming shops and restaurants of Avalon.
