The Destination
With Greek temples, Roman mosaics, and bold Italian cuisine, Sicily is a Mediterranean cultural explosion on par with Mt. Etna, an active volcano and the island's most impressive physical feature.

The controlled chaos of capital Palermo gives visitors a first full glimpse of what it means to be Sicilian. Its textured history—the city has been conquered by the Phoenicians, Spanish, and Arabs—is apparent in every colorful mosaic, Baroque facade, and aromatic street-side food stall. Beauty can be found both inside (at world-class museums like the Palazzo dei Normanni) and out, at the Botanical Gardens or the golden beaches of Mondello Lido, just north of the city center.

Eighty miles south of the capital, you'll find Agrigento and its magnificent Valley of the Temples, an expansive archaeological site boasting the beautifully preserved Tempio della Concordia (by night, floodlights bathe the ruins in an ethereal glow). Agrigento itself is plucked out of the more recent past, with intricate stucco adorning the walls of 17th-century churches.

But for the fiery passion and cuisine of Sicily, the coastal city of Catania may be your hottest lead. And it's no wonder—lava erupting from Mount Etna has run through the streets at various points in the city's history. Maybe that's why Catanians go out of their way to carpe diem, reveling in fresh seafood, upscale shopping districts, and vibrant nightlife.

For an experience overflowing with Sicilian culture, try this nine-day trip to Palermo, Catania, Ragusa, and Agrigento, courtesy of Key Tours International.

The Itinerary
day 1: Board an overnight flight from the US to Palermo.

day 2: Touch down in Palermo. You'll be greeted and transferred to your hotel, where a welcome cocktail awaits.
Overnight at Cristal Palace. Dinner provided.

day 3: Stroll the lively streets of charming Cefalù, a small coastal town abuzz with energy, and check out the medieval Norman Cathedral; then head to Castelbuono, a village so named for its impressive castle. After stopping to admire the church of Matrice Vecchia and its bell tower, get a taste of signature Sicilian products at a local shop, such as panettone and Rosolio, a rose-petal liqueur. Bellies full, you'll make your way to Catania for the evening.
Overnight at Grand Hotel Excelsior. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

day 4: From your location in Catania, you'll have easy access to Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Also nearby is the small coastal town of Taormina, where you'll find an ancient Greek theater and lovely public gardens.
Overnight at Grand Hotel Excelsior. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

day 5: Admire the archaeological wonders of Siracusa, a city steeped in rich Greek history. Venture by bridge to the center of it all, the island of Ortigia. Known as the Old City, this demure destination draws visitors to its picturesque piazzas, shops, and cafés. In the afternoon, depart to Ragusa, a city with a unique landscape split in two by a ravine. The upper area was built after an earthquake in the 1693, while hilly lower Ragusa Ibla is an old town as well-preserved as a storybook illustration. Get your own taste of tradition with a sampling of Sicilian goodies in an upscale neighborhood bar.
Overnight at Poggio del Sole Resort. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

day 6: Set out for the drive to Agrigento, stopping along the way at Piazza Armerina, which boasts the world's largest collection of striking late Roman mosaics. Continue on to Agrigento to see the Valley of the Temples, a stellar example of Greek architecture, on a cool panoramic tour.
Overnight at Best Western Dioscuri Bay Palace. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

day 7: Sightsee at Selinunte, the largest archaeological park in the Mediterranean region, and marvel at the temples and acropolis. Then, cultivate your love for wine and olives even further in the farming town of Castelvetrano. Stop in Segesta, the site of an unfinished Doric temple, on your way to Palermo.
Overnight at Cristal Palace. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

day 8: In Sicily's capital, tour the town and take in the sights of the cathedral and the Palatina Chapel. From the cloistered Benedictine monastery to the 12th-century cathedral, the feast for the eyes continues in Monreale—a town perched above the Golden Shell, a valley teeming with oranges, olives, and almonds. Spend the afternoon as you please, with an optional excursion to Monte Pellegrino.
Overnight at Cristal Palace. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

day 9: You'll be transferred to the airport to board your return flight to the US.
