The Destination
The Azores are Neverland in the Atlantic Ocean—a cluster of islands so far off Portugal's coast that they have established themselves as an autonomous region. Volcanic calderas, crater lakes, and hot springs pock the landscape, serving as reminders of the geothermal activity that birthed the islands.

As if to set you up for the Azores's intensely colorful scenery, the city of Ponta Delgada on the southern island of São Miguel is eerily (yet gracefully) devoid of color. Here, white buildings with black trim line streets paved with slate-colored cobblestones and squares marked by faded grey mosaics. But don't fret, when the white fog lifts over the twin lakes of Sete Cidades to the northwest of the city, the colors will be like none you've ever seen: acid-blue waters surrounded by sheer cliffs draped in neongreen forests. To the east, it's more than just the colors that pop—around Lagoa do Fogo, geysers and hot springs hiss and gurgle, sending plumes of steam high into the air.

But some of the islands' best views are seen from the ocean, where yachts and whale-watching vessels can marvel at the volcanic topography in silhouette against the backlit Atlantic sky—not to mention the sleek forms of blue, humpback, and sperm whales cresting above the ocean surface.

The Itinerary
day 1: Board your flight from the US to Ponta Delgada, the Azores's capital located on São Miguel island. Upon arrival, a Yazores representative will be waiting to transport you to your hotel.
Overnight at São Miguel Park Hotel.

day 2: In store for today will be a three-hour Jeep tour of Lagoa do Fogo, a beautiful crater lake in the center of São Miguel. You'll drive through the nature reserve and see Caldeira Velha (a hot-spring water fall), Caldeiras, Ponta do Cintrão, and Ribeira Grande.
Overnight at São Miguel Park Hotel. Breakfast provided.

day 3: In the morning, you'll embark on a half-day Jeep tour of Sete Cidades, a massive volcanic crater on the west side of São Miguel island. Inside the caldera are four lakes and the city of Sete Cidades. You'll start at Vista do Rei point for lovely views of Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, then start out on the walking path along the rim of the caldera. You'll be able to see the ocean and coastal villages to the left, and the crater lakes to the east. After your tour, return to Ponta Delgada for a three-hour whale-watching trip in the afternoon. You'll board a two-level catamaran with 360-degree viewing decks, then set out in hopes of spotting some of the many whale and dolphin species found in the Azores.
Overnight at São Miguel Park Hotel. Breakfast provided.

day 4: You'll set out on a half-day city tour of Ponta Delgada today. The walking tour will show you the urban center and several landmarks like the Church of St. Peter, Mercado da Graça, the Church of St. Sebastian, the City Gates, and the Palace of Conceição.
Overnight at São Miguel Park Hotel. Breakfast provided.

day 5: Bid goodbye to the Azores, then transfer to the airport for your return flight home.
Breakfast provided.
