The Destinations
Softly curved like the surface of a shell, the islands that comprise the Nusa Tenggara at the eastern end of Indonesia are as diverse as they are beautiful. The Hindu island of Bali has evoked generations of fevered wanderlust for its views of pristine, soft sand beaches, lush rice fields shaded by mountain slopes, and intricate monuments throughout. It is easy to pass the time between sherbet-hued sunsets on the water, whether it's on a longboard rushing toward the shore or diving toward coral reefs vibrant with marine life. But, given the thousands of temples that dot the island as symbols of ancient traditions, and the renowned hospitality of the Balinese people, there are plenty of reasons to stay on dry land.

The Lombok Strait divides Bali from Lombok, and the mostly Muslim island benefits from a slower, more rural pace. Surfers tote their boards to the island's seemingly isolated waves, while others can explore the towns and villages that earned Lombok its nickname, "The Island of 1,000 Mosques." Elsewhere, hikers can climb the volcano, Gunung Rinjani, and stop to splash in waterfalls and swim in hot springs along the way. But no stop in Lombok would be complete without a trip to the coral reefs of Gili Islands and its secluded, white-sand setting.
