The Destination
Just outside the Arctic Circle, Reykjavik is the northernmost capital in the world and the center of civilization in Iceland. Despite the latitude, warm ocean currents make the climate more similar to New England's than Siberia's. The city itself feels torn between village folklife and 21st-century urbanity. Futuristic, avant-garde buildings like the glass-domed Perlan punctuate the cityscape, but traditional low-rise structures with brightly painted roofs still outnumber them. The thoroughly cosmopolitan people are acutely aware of their place in the socioeconomic landscape of Europe, but take ever opportunity to celebrate their Viking heritage. Many believe in huldufólk ("hidden people"), magical elf-like beings living in the volcanic rock that must not be disturbed.

Reykjavik is a singularly bewitching city with one foot in the globalized future and one in the folkloric past. Experience it for yourself on this five-day trip courtesy of go-today.

The Itinerary
day 1: Board your overnight flight from New York City, Boston, or Seattle to Reykjavik, Iceland.

day 2: Arrive in Reykjavik, then make your own way to your hotel. You'll have a full day at leisure to explore the city as you please.
Overnight at CenterHotel Plaza or CenterHotel Arnarhvoll.

day 3: In store for your second day in Reykjavik is a city sightseeing tour. The tour bus will pick you up from the hotel and drive you to the presidential residence at Bessastaðir, near the city of Hafnarfjörður. Hafnarfjörður is known for one of Iceland's largest populations of "hidden people," elf-like creatures living among the rocks. In Reykjavik, enjoy spectacular views from the observation deck at Perlan, a glass-domed building and exhibition space which was built directly on top of the city's hot water tanks. You'll also see Laugardalur, a popular recreation district with various sports facilities and a geothermally heated outdoor swimming pool. Last, but not least, you'll visit Hallgrímskirkja church and the old town center with the Icelandic Parliament at Alþingi and Reykjavik City Hall.
Overnight at CenterHotel Plaza or CenterHotel Arnarhvoll.

day 4: You'll have one last day free to spend in Reykjavik.
Overnight at CenterHotel Plaza or CenterHotel Arnarhvoll.

day 5: Depart your hotel for the airport, where you'll catch a return flight to the US.
