See the wilderness Thoreau described as a "continuousness of the forest" from this North Woods lodge.

The Destination
Spiraling through the St. Croix Valley past such tongue-twisting lakes as Pocumcus and Sysladobsis, Grand Lake Stream boasts some of the best salmon fishing in the Lower 48. Here, the vast, untamed river hasn't changed much since Henry David Thoreau visited in the 19th century. Though the black bear and loon still reign in this wild region, you'll find slightly tamer pursuits—whale-watching, sailing, and golfing among them—only a short drive east along the spectacular coastline.

The Digs
A long-time bastion for bird hunting and fly fishing in the Maine wilderness, Weatherby's has a North Woods location perfect for nature lovers and outdoorsy types. This Orvis-endorsed lodge has its origins in the 19th century, and the history is apparent in the pine furniture, brick fireplaces, and tasteful antiques decorating each of the 15 rustic cottages. In the evening, sit down to such hearty fare as fresh-baked bread, fish chowder, and strawberry rhubarb pie in the early-American dining room before retiring to the screened porch to sip tea and swap stories of the day's successes.

The Diversions
Grand Lake Stream
Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge
St. Croix Country Club
Campobello Island

  • "The region still has fabulously remote enclaves where moose and loon predominate, and where the turf hasn't changed all that much since Thoreau paddled through in the mid-19th century and found it all 'moosey and mossy.'"
