The Destination
On a clear day, you can spot Mount Hood rising hazily beyond the spectacular Columbia River Gorge in Lyle, Washington. Though seemingly miles away from anywhere—the town itself is little more than a grocery store and gas station—the wide open spaces have facilitated a bevy of cultured pursuits. Windsurfing has become popular on nearby beaches, and boutique wineries dapple the rolling landscape. Outdoorsy types will appreciate the abundance of sunny days year-round, but an hour's drive southwest to Mt. Hood offers a chance to enjoy the white stuff, too. Best of all? This secluded town is still just 15 miles from Hood River, 1.5 hours from Portland, and four hours from Seattle.

The Digs
The Lyle Hotel is a turn-of-the-century charmer that fits right in with its rural surroundings. This historic railroad hotel has been instrumental in developing local tourism since it was built in 1905, and though amenities have been updated with the times, visitors will find the aesthetics little changed. Get comfortable with warm quilts on the one queen or two single beds—your private bathroom is right across the hall. Be sure to stop by the dining room for self-service coffee and tea service each morning before you head out to explore. After an afternoon of wine tasting, return in the evening to dine at the newly reopened restaurant and bar.

The Diversions
Explore. Spend some time enjoying the beautiful Columbia River
Sip. Taste your way through five fantastic local wineries—or check out breweries in Hood River, White Salmon, and The Dalles at your own expense
Dine. Enjoy a delicious meal at The Lyle Hotel's restaurant, open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m.
