As the dragon flies, there are 5,000 miles separating Bellevue from Beijing, but thankfully Westerners have Wild Ginger, a Southeast Asian restaurant that brings a taste of the Pacific Rim to the Pacific Northwest. Take a culinary tour through Hong Kong with a 12-plate dim sum brunch for two people, including a pot of loose-leaf tea, and your choice of a wasabi-charged bloody Mary, lychee-sweetened cooler, or pomegranate-accented mimosa ($104). Gratuities and all other fees are included.
Set in Bellevue's The Bravern, this two-level dining room is the three-year-old offshoot of the beloved Seattle original, which has been featured in Gourmet, Bon Appétit, and Condé Nast Traveler. Owners Rick and Ann Yoder traveled through Southeast Asia in 1989, and their appreciation for Far East cuisine translated into the first Wild Ginger that same year.
During the dim sum brunch, available only at this location, you'll be served a traditional Chinese parade of small plates. Start with har gow (bonnet-shaped dumplings filled with hand-chopped shrimp) and end with lo mai gai (bundles of steamed sticky rice wrapped in a lotus leaf). In between, you can expect hum bao with barbecue pork; pan-fried dumplings with scallops and chives; wok-fried radish cakes with barbecue pork and hoisin; beef dumplings scented with five spices; green papaya salad sprinkled with peanuts; and a marvelously sweet Malay cake.
The Yoders hired chefs from China, Indonesia, and Vietnam, which means you can taste the flavors of a transpacific jaunt to Asia's street carts without a passport. As they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder... and the stomach grow hungrier.
"Smart service, smart wine list, smarting with excitement, [Wild Ginger's] got new-Seattle yin and old-Seattle yang. And you've got to love that."
