Winning any Food Network show is a formidable feat. Winning Cupcake Wars without using eggs or butter sounds nearly impossible, but Doron Petersan, owner of the vegan bakery and cafe Sticky Fingers Sweets & Eats, pulled it off -- twice. Discover her championship techniques during a baking class at LivingSocial's 918 F Street, where you'll learn how to make -- and get to taste -- a couple of the specialty goodies from her Columbia Heights shop.

Petersan will start the class with an introduction to her business and tips on vegan baking. You'll then roll up your sleeves to start baking two flavors of cookie sandwiches: Cowvin (oatmeal cookies with vanilla cream frosting) and Phat Mint (chocolate-mint-flavored cookies with vanilla cream frosting). You'll make three jumbo-sized cookie sandwiches of each flavor to take home -- that is, if you don't devour them all on the spot. Food Network blue ribbons not included.

butter isn't always better

Doron Petersan, who holds degrees in nutrition and food science, gave up eating animal products at age 22, after working in a veterinarian's office. Determined to find ways to not sacrifice flavor, she started baking vegan sweets out of her home 15 years ago. Her passion led to Sticky Fingers Sweets & Eats, which opened in 2002. Since then, Petersan has been voted the best bakery in DC by Washington City Paper readers; on the Washington Post's Best Vegan Restaurants list; been in Inc., Brides, and Self magazines; and, of course, twice beat out traditional cupcake bakers on the Food Network's Cupcake Wars. Who needs butter or cream?
