One of the best ways to get to know the Mile High City is to embark on some of the innumerable Denver tours available. Fortunately for your wallet, we created an all-day itinerary of no-cost tours. And if you’re looking for other things to do in Denver, this seven-stop adventure also includes a few suggestions for free side trips.

Stop 1: Colorado State Capitol 
Tour times: hourly; 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday–Friday 
As one of the most iconic Denver landmarks, the Colorado State Capitol is the perfect place to start. Arrive early for a trip to the top of the golden dome and soak up a sweeping panoramic view of the city.

Stop 2: Denver Art Museum 
Children’s admission to the Denver Art Museum is always free, but unless it’s a free day (the first Saturday of each month), adult admission to the popular Denver museum’s innards ranges from $8 to $13. Instead of heading inside, stroll through the museum’s free outdoor exhibit, where you can take in the building’s stunning architecture or pose for photo opps with massive modern sculptures.

Stop 3: 16th Street Mall 
Grab the free shuttle from Civic Center Station to 16th Street Mall. Take a leisurely walk along the mile-long pedestrian thoroughfare or take a seat and dig into food-truck fare. You can also snag lunch from the café inside the Tattered Cover Book Store before perusing its selection of books.

Stop 4: Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Museum at Sports Authority Field 
From downtown Denver, you can easily board a bus to the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Museum at Sports Authority Field. Learn about Colorado’s football greats, as well as track-and-field stars and world-class fencers. The stadium tour is extra, but museum admission is free.

Stop 5: Hammond’s Candies 
Tour times: every half hour; weekdays 9 a.m.–3 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m.–3 p.m. 
Hammond’s Candies may be out of the way, but its factory tour is worth a trip. Kids love watching the candy-making process, and even adults may find themselves mesmerized as Hammond’s lollipops, taffy, and hard candies are pulled and shaped by hand.

Stop 6: Stranahan’s 
Tour times: hourly; 11 a.m.–5 p.m. or 6 p.m. Wednesday–Monday 
Reserve a ticket at least a few days in advance for a one-hour tour of Stranahan’s, Colorado’s first whiskey distillery. After you’ve been walked through the brew house, still house, rack house, and bottling-room floor, it’s time to sample some whiskey.

Stop 7: Great Divide Brewing Co. 
Tour times: hourly; 3–5 p.m. on weekdays; 2–6 p.m. on weekends 
If you’re more interested in craft beer, Great Divide Brewing Co. offers first-come, first-serve tours each afternoon. Not only are adult-supervised children aged 12 and older welcome, but those 21 and older can buy up to three samples for $1 each—and the samples’ proceeds go to charity.
