What to Expect

Journey into the historic Tremé section of New Orleans, where the New Orleans African American Museum of Art, History, and Culture stands as a testament to resilience and achievement. This vibrant neighborhood was once home to the nation’s largest and most politically progressive community of Black people by the mid-1850s. Your visit offers a unique opportunity to explore this profound legacy, walking through the very grounds that were once the Morand Plantation and later a bustling hub for free persons of color. You'll gain access to all permanent and special exhibits, unveiling captivating stories and illuminating the profound contributions of African Americans to New Orleans and the broader African Diaspora.

Discover why NOAAM is a nexus for inspiration, learning, and connection, serving both locals and visitors worldwide! You'll be captivated by the architectural "gumbo" of Tremé, including an excellent example of Creole architecture in the 1828 Meilleur-Goldthwaithe House, which is part of the NOAAM campus. Knowledgeable staff are on hand to enrich your visit, ready to answer questions and share deeper insights. Everyone here is united in the museum’s mission to preserve history and elevate the art, culture, and contributions of African Americans in New Orleans and across the African Diaspora.
