The Destination
The borders of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia meet at the intersection of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. Here, Harpers Ferry has become a mecca for outdoorsy types from all three states. But before the kayaking, zip-lining, white-water rafting, and Appalachian Trail sounded the call of adventure, Harpers Ferry was the site of important historical events, including a raid by abolitionists that served as a catalyst for the Civil War.

The Digs
Continuing a 225-year tradition, The Light Horse Inn is well-versed in hospitality. In 1780, it housed travelers on their way to the Western Frontier, charging 17 cents for overnight accommodations and breakfast—and 10 cents to board your horse. Today, you'll still find a charming bed and breakfast experience, though there's off-street parking instead of a hitching post. The property features lovingly preserved details like original heart-pine floors and antique furnishings. Three guest suites have king or queen beds and private bathrooms; some even boast a Jacuzzi tub, 10-foot ceilings, or a small kitchenette. Curl up with a book, set up a board game, or connect to the free Wi-Fi in the comfortable common areas, or head out to explore: The Appalachian Trail, shopping, dining, and historic sites in Lower Town Harpers Ferry are all within walking distance.

  • Stayed on the third floor. Everything was beautiful, Wi-Fi works great. Excellent breakfast.
