It’s a nightmare situation: you’ve planned a family day at the park, scheduled a trip to the zoo, or just laced up your shoes for an afternoon run—then suddenly you hear a crash of thunder, and it starts to pour. Your plans are toast—or are they?

Yes, the rainy day blues are a real thing, but a dreary weather forecast isn’t an excuse to stay inside all day and binge watch TV. We’ve compiled a list of rainy day activities that’ll give kids and adults plenty of things to do. So take a few breaths, grab an umbrella, and head out on one of these rainy day adventures. Here’s what to do if:

1. You already put on your bathing suit...

Take the family to an indoor water park.

Even if there’s a torrential downpour outside, indoor water parks keep conditions ideal for a day at the beach. Most parks set the thermostat around a balmy 84 degrees: the perfect temperature to plunge down water slides, swim in the wave pool, or relax as you float along a lazy river.

2. You just need to get off the couch and move…

Jump at a trampoline park.

It’s an obvious outing for kids, but anyone can have fun at a trampoline park. Bounce off the walls, play trampoline basketball, or perform acrobatics into pits of foam. Many parks also use their springy surfaces to host full-body fitness classes, which eliminates any weather-related excuse you had to skip a workout.

3. You love nature (but not enough to get soaked)…

Visit the aquarium.

Like most things on our list, trips to the aquarium make great rainy day activities for kids and adults. You can easily spend the whole day inside (minimizing the time you need to navigate the bad weather), and it’s hard to beat strolling through a tunnel surrounded by sharks, rays, and colorful fish. Pro tips: buy tickets online if you can, and check your aquarium’s schedule for feeding times, movies, and other must-see events.

4. You already packed your golf clubs...

Play (simulated) golf.

A rainy day is still the perfect time to tee off at world-famous courses from St. Andrews to Pebble Beach—you’ll just have to do it indoors. Golf simulators let players use their own clubs and hit real balls right into a giant screen, while cameras and various high-tech gadgets translate those shots into an interactive day on the links. In addition to re-creating famous courses, most simulators have built-in training programs and digital driving ranges.

5. You have your best friends with you...

Solve a room escape game.

Let’s be real—you and your friends have already discussed at length what to do in a zombie apocalypse or how to pull off the perfect bank heist. So now’s the time to put those plans to work. Games take place inside locked rooms and usually last 60 minutes, during which time you’ll solve riddles, track down clues, and find the literal key to your escape. (Read our escape game tips before you head out.)

6. You just need to get the kids out of the house...

Take them bowling.

As Professional Bowlers Association member and coach Bill Spigner told the The Guide, “[b]owling is the best social recreation sport we have in the country.” Parents, grandparents, and kids of all ages can play alongside one another. Even better: most bowling alleys have other rainy day activities on-tap, such as pool tables for adults and arcade games for kids.

7. You promised a romantic picnic...

Head to a wine bar instead.

There’s a reason so many romantic movies have scenes set in the rain. You don’t necessarily need to profess your love during a downpour, but a cozy afternoon inside on a cold, wet day can bring couples even closer together. Wine, cheese, and other treats at a tasting bar make a perfect romantic (indoor) outing.

8. You were going to stay inside anyway...

See some live theater. No excuses.

You’ve probably been meaning to do this anyway, and a dark and dreary day offers the perfect reason to finally go. So call your significant other or best friend, order some tickets, and escape for a couple hours into your local theater’s latest comedy or musical.
