Elliott Johns, the winemaker at Emerson Vineyards, espouses an interesting philosophy when it comes to his craft. He likes to make wines that almost make themselves. He means that the key to quality winemaking is growing great grapes under ideal conditions. Of course, grapes are a temperamental fruit, and ideal conditions are comparatively rare. Perhaps that's why, of the 127 acres at at this sustainable vineyard, only about 20 or so lie under vine. Those 20 acres almost exclusively produce Oregon's famous pinot noir and its clones. The limited selection of vintages, then, represents the very best the land, the grapes, and the winemaker have to offer.
