Back in the 1860s, a Swedish professor and eye expert named Herman Snellen devised a ratio to determine and express visual acuity—all using a simple eye chart. Today, the Snellen Chart, dotted with random letters of various sizes, hangs in optometry offices across the world, allowing docs to determine how well a patient sees compared to the “standard”—one who can see two chart objects from 20 feet away, or as we would know it, someone with 20/20 vision.
