Greathouse Butterfly Farm, Earleton
Greathouse Butterfly Farm, Earleton52 reviewsAbout Greathouse Butterfly Farm
The gentle yet noble butterfly seems as if it would be a difficult species to farm. What do you feed the caterpillars? What kind of coop do you keep the butterflies in? At Greathouse Butterfly Farm, visitors have all these questions answered with an up-close look at a working farm.
The Story: Zane Greathouse brought butterfly pupae to his fifth-grade classes to teach them about life science. This technique became so popular, Zane soon began sending pupae to teachers all over the state. As demand for butterflies blossomed, Zane began the family-run butterfly farm in 1994.
The Butterflies: The farm raises over 45 species of butterflies native to Florida. On tours, visitors discover exactly how butterflies are farmed, hand feed them, and see them in every stage of development, including the awkward tween stages.
The Farm: Zane and his wife oversee Greathouse Butterfly Farm, raising the butterflies on a pecan grove planted by Zane's grandfather. The grounds are still rife with pecan trees that are almost a century old.
