Since the 1880s, the Henry family has been farming land in the picturesque Umpqua Valley. But it wasn't until the 1970s that Calvin Scott Henry III decided to repurpose the land as a vineyard. Calvin's research told him that the valley's climate was similar to that of Burgundy in France, so he scouted out the best places on the estate to grow grapes, and even ultimately invented his own grape trellises that increase yield and decrease acidity—other vineyards in similar climates have adopted some of his strategies.
The result of the family's labor can be tasted in Henry Estate Winery's four signature bottles: pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay, and white riesling. Visitors can discover their favorite varietal in the vineyard's tasting room, a quaint two-story building in the midst of beautifully landscaped gardens that offer views of the surrounding river valley.
